WRFD Exempt Firemen’s Association
The WRFD Exempt Firemen’s Association was officially established on August 25, 1909, following a series of meetings earlier that year. The groundwork for the organization was laid by a group of dedicated firefighters who convened at the firehouse to discuss the formation of an association for exempt firefighters.
Founding History
- June 25, 1909: A preliminary meeting was attended by Franz Fritsch, Emil Piravano, Jacob Bloom, William White, and John Kiefer. At this meeting, Franz Fritsch was appointed chairman pro tem, and William White served as secretary pro tem. Emil Piravano was tasked with contacting other exempt firefighters.
- August 25, 1909: A follow-up meeting saw a larger attendance, including Alfred Gramlich, William Jantzen, C. Fred Shotwell, and George Young. It was during this meeting that the association was officially organized, with the election of the following officers:
- President-Treasurer: Franz Fritsch
- Trustees: Alfred Gramlich, George Young, and C. Fred Shotwell
What is an Exempt Firefighter?
An exempt firefighter is a municipal firefighter who meets the following requirements:
- Serves in a fire department for a minimum of seven years.
- Attends at least 25% of fires and drills during their tenure.
Exempt firefighters receive several benefits, which may include:
- A death benefit.
- Potential exemption from jury duty (though not automatic).
- A free hawker’s license.
- Tenure in office for certain municipal positions.
Purpose of the Exempt Association
The WRFD Exempt Firemen’s Association serves as a platform for veteran firefighters to:
- Share experiences and build camaraderie with peers.
- Stay connected with the fire service through non-suppression activities.
- Elect representatives to the local relief association, thereby strengthening its role in supporting firefighters.
This association honors the legacy and contributions of exempt firefighters while fostering ongoing involvement in fire department affairs.
